Her embroidered portraits on display at the gallery/hairdressers in Gloucester Road, are inspired by images in fashion magazines that strike her as slightly off-kilter.

The Hove-based artist said: “I work from images that surprise me or bring out a memory in me.

“I look for something off kilter and stylish that reminds me of my past life and I think about the future.”

Ms Whitfield’s career includes creating costumes for films including Robert Downey Junior’s padding for Chaplin and clothing for Irregular Choice.

Her passion is reusing and recycling material for her artwork and one-off clothes.

Embroidered portraits and fancy flourishes adorn Ms Whitfield’s upcycled fashion line.

The exhibition is at Brush until October 7.
