Beauty Review: 'I'd never seen my skin look so clear'

I've been lucky enough to enjoy quite a few beauty treatments in my time, so when I was offered the chance to try a HydraFacial - unexplored terrain - I jumped at the chance.

The HydraFacial, which is offered by A New You in Brighton, has become a firm favourite with celebrities, including Paris Hilton, Suki Waterhouse, Sophie Anderton and even award-winning business woman Karren Brady.

I went along to A New You at Trafalgar Street, which offers surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments, not really knowing what to expect.

First of all, the clinician Maria talked to me about what I wanted to get from the the treatment. There’s a range of options, from anti-aging, acne fighting, treatment for rosacea and pigmentation, or skin health.

We decided to go for the skin health option, with some treatment tailored for a small patch of acne.

The treatment began with lymphatic drainage, which helps to increase circulation and eliminate toxins in the skin. Then it was cleansing and exfoliating using a hoover-like machine which rubs away the dead skin cells, while adding serum containing ingredients which nourish the skin.

Having your face ‘hoovered’ might sound a bit odd, but it wasn’t especially unpleasant.

A chemical peel was next, helping to improve acne and regulate oil levels in the skin.

Once the chemical peel was off, it was time for the extraction stage, where blackheads, oils and other impurities are literally sucked out of the skin. This bit did hurt a little, but as the old adage goes, ‘no pain, no gain’.

Despite the momentary discomfort, this part of the treatment was ultimately really satisfying. When Maria showed me how clear my skin was in the mirror after the extraction I was amazed.

I was equally shocked to see how much oil had come out of my skin - at least a few cup fulls - which was a strange experience, although I was told it’s not unusual.

Again while the extraction took place, serum was added back into the skin to replace the oils that had been removed. After this stage was hydration, with a juicy cocktail of hyaluronic acid and antioxidants, added to the skin to replenish.

Then to finish, Maria used a blue LED light to kill bacteria which causes acne. This part of the treatment is said to reduce future breakouts. There is also a red LED light for anti-aging treatments.

The results immediately after the treatment was remarkable - I'd never seen my skin look so clear, not a blackhead in sight, with glowing skin and clear pores.

The HydraFacial was unlike any other treatment I’d ever had. As well as feeling a difference straight away, the results lasted for weeks after, and even some of my friends and family commented on my clear, glowing skin.

It’s recommended you have several treatments to get the full effect, although one made a difference in itself.

A New You is describing the treatment as having ‘results comparable to more aggressive chemical peels and microdermabrasion without the discomfort or downtime’, and added ‘clients are finding this innovative approach, a refreshing and relaxing alternative’.

Jackie Knight, Owner of A New You says; “We are glad to offer HydraFacial to Brighton and all of Sussex. The results are remarkable. It’s a wonderful advance for skin health and we are very excited to offer this treatment.”
