The beaches at Brighton Central and Hove Lawns were given Blue Flag status, meaning the water quality, environmental management, safety and services were at the highest standards.

And Saltdean beach was handed the Seaside Award, which recognises top beach management and water quality.

The charity handed out 68 Blue Flags and 117 Seaside Awards across the UK.

The awards are the quality marks for the UK’s beaches and mean those visiting them can be sure that they are clean, safe and meet the highest environmental standards, as well as the tough international bathing water quality standards.
