Police have named the 78-year-old man who died following a hit and run in Brighton on Tuesday evening (January 10).

Jonos Sasvari, known as John, lived in Little Preston Street. He died after being hit by a car at the junction between Old Steine and St James’s Street.

Officers said no next of kin have been traced in the UK, but they are working to trace if he had any family members elsewhere.

Sergeant Richard Hornsey said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the friends and all those who knew John in the city.

“We continue to appeal to anyone who saw what happened or has any other information to contact police here or on collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting Operation Beresford.”

Two men who were arrested in connection with the incident have been released on bail.
