Event for talented young musicians in Brighton and Hove

A new string festival for young musicians was held in the city at the weekend, with another event being held this Saturday (March 18).

Lisa de Simone, head of strings for Brighton and Hove Music and Arts, organised the festival - the first of its kind held in the city.

It was aimed specifically at young string instrument specialists, providing workshops and performance opportunities, from solos to quartets to full orchestra works as well as expert tuition from some of the city’s top string players.

Councillor Dan Chapman, chair of Brighton and Hove City Council’s children, young people and skills committee, said: “This combination of expert tuition and performance opportunities is an exciting new way of nurturing young musical talent in the city.”

The first day of the event, on Saturday, March 11, was held at Varndean School, and focused on string players of Grade 2-3 standard.

Ms de Simone said: “Last Saturday (March 11) we have celebrated day one of the festival: the solos, duos and small ensemble performances were marvellous and the quality of the playing excellent. The children have played pieces from Bach to Over the Rainbow.

“The full string orchestra sounded absolutely stunning performing Ode to Joy by Beethoven, The Royal March of the Lion and The Elephant by Saint Saens.”

Another event will be held on Saturday, March 18, the festival moves to the Brighton and Hove Music and Arts’ base in County Oak Avenue.

Running from 1pm to 6pm this event will be geared up for string players of grade 4-6 standard.

Young people can sign up for a full day or for individual activities, and for orchestra, small group or solo performances.
