The Coastguard Agency has confirmed the search for a missing swimmer off Brighton beach has been ‘scaled down’.
The coastguard was called by Brighton police just before 8am this morning, a spokeman confirmed, following reports of a person entering the water.
“On that information we set off a search and rescue involving Brighton lifeboard, Shoreham Coastguard and the Lee-on-the-Solent rescue helicopter, ambulance and police,” they said.
“The efforts saturated the area between palace pier and Hove, it was scaled back around 11.10am pending further investigation.”
The spokesman added the matter has now been handed back to the police to investigate.
