From an office and information point, to a shop, gallery and events venue – the West Pier Centre is set to welcome tourists to the city, as well as becoming a valuable community resource for residents.

To celebrate the opening of the new centre, an exhibition showcasing the work of former Guardian photographer Roger Bamber, will be on display from today (August 23). Roger has photographed the pier from 1988 to the present day, and is considered one of the greatest photographers of the pier in its history.

The centre, located in one of the seafront arches to the east of i360, sits within the West Pier Piazza, which also features the Golden Spiral, incorporating 24 original columns from the old pier. The columns were restored by the Swan Foundry in Oxfordshire, with each column set in a cast-iron base designed and produced by artist and sculptor Steve Geliot.

Michael Farthing, West Pier Trust chairman, said: “We are delighted that the new centre is opening and believe the space will be a wonderful celebration of the old pier. Do visit us there and learn more about our exciting future. This is just the beginning!”

Rachel Clark, West Pier Trust chief executive, said: “After many years without a permanent base we are over the moon to be back on the seafront. The centre will be a great resource for the community; from families, school parties and new visitors to the city – to everyone who has always loved the West Pier and its history.”

The West Pier Centre is open from 10.30am daily.
