You know sometimes you get the feeling that you’re witnessing the start of something big?

Idles

Idles

Well that’s the feeling I have when watching a Bristol-based quintet, aptly named called Idles.

I was lucky enough to stumble across Idles (made up of Joe, Mark, Lee, Dev and Jon) six months ago when they supported DIIV at the Concorde 2. And, to be honest, Idles’ nose-bleed, on-the-ears sound just wiped the floor with them.

Now, half a year later, here they are embarking on a 24-date UK tour to promote their debut, visceral, post-punk sounding album Brutalism.

Imagine what brutalist architecture looks and feels like, then turn that feeling into a band and hey presto – Idles!

They make loud, fast, on-the-edge, confrontational sounds, but, having said that, at the same time they make me smile with their unusual lyrics. Lyrics like “Why don’t you get a job?, Even Tarquin has a job, Mary Berry’s got a job” from my favourite Idles track ‘Well Done’. They even have a track on their album entitled ‘Rachel Khoo’, which surely is a wonderful ‘recipe’ for success if ever I’ve of heard one.

So to this totally sold-out gig. Well, what can I say except that these very fortunate punters were treated to an all-too-brief, eleven-track set, made up of nine bundles of energy from the aforementioned album; namely ‘Faith In The City’, ‘Date Night’, ‘Mother’, the strangely titled ‘1049 Gotho’ (which is about depression), ‘Divide and Conquer’, ‘Exeter’, ‘Stendhal Syndrome’, ‘Well Done’ and ‘Benzocaine’.

The remaining tracks given an outing were ‘Queens’ (from the four-track ‘Meat’ EP) and, as far as I can tell, the as yet unreleased ‘Rottweiler’.

I would seriously recommend checking out the ‘Well Done’ video and then purchase the album if you like it. Myself and my two mates all bought the album at the gig as they are the best ‘new things’ around at the moment.
