Eastbourne and District Camcorder Club

AT the November 7 Members' Showcase, the chairman welcomed potential new members Jim and Chris from Bexhill and went on to remind members that this evening was an ideal opportunity for them to show any films which they had produced in order to benefit from constructive criticism from their more experienced colleagues.

Dave Hillebrand set a very high standard with his film about Cambridge and the traditions of its colleges. His excellent film work was accompanied by a commentary packed with accurate historical details and delivered enthusiastically.

The college gardens and grounds were at their glorious best as the King's College choristers entered their beautiful chapel; as the May bumps took place in June; as the punters enjoyed themselves on the River Cam; as the Duke of Edinburgh, their enthusiastic Chancellor, awarded the Degrees.

Peter Deadman's Panama Canal followed his holiday cruise on the SS Arcadia as this liner was guided through the locks by the 'mechanical mules' which cost 1.5m each.

As the Arcadia rose some 85 feet and crossed Gatton Lake, Peter's commentary recalled the construction of the canal.

The French began the operation in 1880 but abandoned the operation some few years later as between 20 and 50,000 lives had been lost through malaria and yellow fever. The American Government bought the operation for $40,000 and finished the construction.

Bob had purchased a camcorder with its own DV. disc and he explained that he did not understand the editing software which he had. Consequently his filming of harbour scenes were not edited at all.

Members will assist him to begin the exciting experience of film editing. This had been a useful exercise.

Derek Ashby has edited some of the film taken at the Hippodrome Theatre which he has incorporated into a 'this is your life' film of Romy McCabe. Romy concluded that in spite of all the efforts, the rehearsals and the nervous tension involved she was a very lucky lady who loved her work and hopes that it will continue for a lot longer. Jim Milne produced a similar film in which he included interviews with the chairman, John Pick.

John's passionate desire is that this theatre should survive and become once again the most successful Eastbourne theatre. This 1,200 seats Theatre and Opera House from the 1880s was designed by Phipps, who was also the proprietor for a number of years.

At the next meeting members are invited to bring along their cameras in order to get to know them better with the guidance of David Diamond. This will be on Wednesday, December 5 at St. Luke's Parish Centre, Stone Cross at 7.30 p.m. for 7.45p.m.
