Bognor Regis youngsters get their hands dirty to bring colour to their school

The Nyewood CofE Junior School pupils planted 500 crocuses and 200 narcissi, as well as scores of daffodils, to rejuvenate its centenary garden.

They joined Bognor Hotham Rotary Club members for the outdoor work.

Harry Daniels, ten, the school’s boy ambassador, was among those with the trowels and forks. He said: “We were out here the other week raking all the leaves and got 40-50 bags.”

Caralina Ross, also ten, said: “I’m looking forward to the planting. I enjoy having fun and learning at the same time.”

The garden had become neglected since it was created in the grounds of the Brent Road school about 11 years ago.

Rotary community chairman Stuart Hutchison said: “It’s an ideal scheme for us because the children are helping us and will be able to see the results.”
