Lewes students learn survival skills in the Arctic

The Lewes Old Grammar School pupils visited the Finnish Arctic Circle and took part in an expedition run by Really Wild Education.

They learnt how to dig snow caves, tow heavy sledges and cook in the snow.

In temperatures of -16 degrees they also learnt rescue techniques for hypothermia casualties. Pupils also spotted the Northern Lights and enjoyed husky dog sledding.

Teacher Ivana Baric said: “The students had a unique trip that few young people ever get to experience.

“This course combined the challenges of surviving in the Arctic environment with physically demanding activities.

“It was a really special experience hiking up Tankavaara Hill to look out across Norway and Russia.

“For many students this expedition has been an empowering experience.”

One pupil, George Morrison, said the trip had helped him to build confidence.

“I can easily survive in a normal environment if I can survive here,” he said.

The aim of the trip was to teach students about thriving in any environment, including at home and in school.

“It has been great to see the students rising readily and positively to every challenge presented to them day by day in this stunning but punishing environment,” Ms Baric said.

“They have returned home with a refreshed outlook on life, feeling more empowered to seek out and pursue their ambitions.”
