No staff or courses would stay in the town with everything either moved to another campus or closed, but higher education programmes would be run by the college with the university acting as a validator.

Hastings Borough Council leader Peter Chowney said the UoS has expressed informal interest in potentially opening a campus in the town as part of its expansion plans.

However the university said it is not considering this as an option despite the council leader’s comments.

“Hastings council, along with Rother council and East Sussex County Council, commissioned an independent report on the provision of higher education in Hastings, which recommended that as well as supporting the proposed university centre proposals to be provided by SCCH in partnership with UoB, we should also seek other partners to establish a new university campus in Hastings,” Cllr Chowney said.

“Sussex University have informally expressed a potential interest in Hastings as part of their expansion plans, so we will be talking to them about that in the new year.”

A UoS spokesman said: “This isn’t something that the UoS is considering.”

Cllr Chowney added the council is determined to do all it can to make sure Hastings remains a university town.
