Hospital specialists said Louie Toleman, 11, of Horsted Keynes, would suffer with deteriorating arthritis for the rest of his life.

But next week his mum Melissa will open a specialist health centre in Haywards Heath offering the ayurveda treatment which has taken Louis back to being a 100m race winner at his school.

Melissa said: “Louie had arthritis and had no prospects of getting better, according to his doctors. After three months of trying everything possible to help him get better he was in a very bad way, he had 27 swollen and painful joints affected with the disease, his whole body was riddled, he couldn’t walk, he couldn’t use crutches and some days he couldn’t even get out of bed. He was completely disabled.”

Doctors gave him high doses of steroids for the pain and he also had heart, liver and digestive problems. When they said chemotherapy was next, Melissa took drastic action.

She said: “I knew if we carried on down this road, he wouldn’t be alive soon. I had done alternative therapy for ten years and so I’m part of that world. I had heard of ayurveda, but never experienced it. I just knew I needed to get him out of there altogether.”

On July 4 2013 they travelled to a clinic in India where they stayed for two and a half months. They discovered the illness could simply by cured by following a diet and lifestyle more suited to his body type.

He received herbal medication, a nutrition plan and did yoga and meditation, which he continued when he got home under guidance from a therapist here. In three months he was healed and he never suffered a symptom since.

On Tuesday November 10 Melissa will hold an open day her new ayurvedic treatment centre at Oathall House, Haywards Heath ahead of its opening the next day.

With a yoga studio, treatment rooms and a health food cafe people can come to the centre between 10am to 3pm for taster yoga sessions, get discounts for treatments and speak to the 30-strong team which include doctors therapists and nutritionists.

Melissa added: “Therapists in India do seven years of training like our doctors here, but over here they just study medications. With ayurveda you are healing the mind and body instead of just using pills. It’s definitely scientific.

“(The Indian clinic) is what I am committed to create at the centre - a place where you can be educated about health and for diseases to be a thing of the past. I have had two years of studying Ayurveda since Louie’s illness and firmly belief so many people can be helped though this method.”
