The bus, which honours the children’s charity and marks its forthcoming 50th anniversary in 2017, pays homage to Dr Trevor Mann, founder of the Trevor Mann Baby Unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital – and bears his name on the front.

In 1967, Dr Mann set up the Baby Unit and Rockinghorse, recognising that there was a real need for additional resources to improve health care for sick children and babies.

Martin Harris, Brighton and Hove Buses managing director, said: “Rockinghorse is a charity close to the heart of many of our colleagues and customers. We are really excited to celebrate the launch of our new partnership with this special dedicated bus.

“Many of Brighton and Hove Buses and Metrobus employees have family members who have received help from the charity and are backing the bus companies’ choice of Rockinghorse as our charity of the year.”

Nick Stepney, senior supervisor at the bus company, said: “In February, my granddaughter was born 14 weeks premature and weighed only two pounds and six ounces. The Trevor Mann Baby Unit was instrumental in nursing her through early development to reach a healthy weight.

Ryan Heal, chief executive of Rockinghorse, on the Trevor Mann bus “The care and consideration she and the whole family received was fabulous. We couldn’t thank the Rockinghorse enough for the support they have given us – so it’s great that they are now our charity of the year.”

Ryan Heal, chief executive of Rockinghorse, said: “The bus companies have great heritage in the city and across Sussex, so we are particularly delighted to receive such fantastic support.”

Rockinghorse is the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital – “the Alex” – and also supports the Trevor Mann Baby Unit (TMBU) in Brighton as well as the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU), based within the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. It raises money for life-saving, state-of-the-art medical equipment while ensuring that children are treated in an environment that is better suited to their needs.

Working in partnership with the Alex, TMBU and SCBU, Rockinghorse strives to make services stimulating, cutting edge and accessible for the many babies, children and teenagers who need them.
