One third miss their smear test in Brighton and Hove

Women in the city are being urged to respond to their cervical screening invitation letters, and if they’ve missed previous invites, to book an appointment at their GP practice.

Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said from January to June 2018, 34.2 per cent of women aged 25 to 49 years old missed their smear test appointments.

Two women die every day from cervical cancer in England, but it’s estimated that cervical screening saves around 5,000 lives each year.

Dr David Supple, clinical chair for NHS Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Cervical screening can stop cancer before it starts.

“We are urging our residents to act when they get their cervical screening invitation letters and attend their appointment, and if they missed previous invites, to book an appointment at their GP practice now.”
