Record-breaking Pirate Day proves Hastings is the pirate capital of the world

Hastings is the pirate capital of the world and 2010 proved it, with a record-breaking Pirate Day that saw hundreds of swashbuckling smugglers, privateers, buccaneers, freebooters, fortune-hunters, picaroons and sea dogs descend on the town.

From the early hours of the morning, Hastings was awash with cutlass-waving punters sporting eye patches. One of the professional look-a-likes, the actor playing Captain Hector Barbossa, said the view from the stage was an impressive sight.

He said: “The atmosphere was stunning. Everyone was really up for it and I had to send Will Turner and Captain Jack out to kiss some of the girls and calm them down. Hastings is a wonderful town – they should change the signs on the way into town so they say Hastings: Pirate City.”
