City restaurant takes part in Brighton Cocktail Week.

Bill’s Brighton and a number of other bars across the city are celebrating Brighton Cocktail Week an event which runs throughout this weekend (June 7-9).

The popular North Road restaurant is taking part in the city-wide experience which features cut-price price cocktails and discounted tickets for events and masterclasses – for the price of a cocktail week wristband for £10.

On Wednesday (June 5) Bill’s hosted a fun and informative rum masterclass with Havana Club Rum, one of the sponsors of the Brighton Cocktail Week.

In the face of the current success of gin, rum is holding it’s own in the popularity stakes and the mojito remains one of the most popular cocktails in the UK.

A brief history lesson looked at the spirit’s creation in the Caribbean in the 1600s when an enterprising soul realised there was grog and money to be made from fermenting the molasses from sugar cane plantations.

An expert on the topic guided the cocktail fans through the finer points of production and the flavours and aromas to look out for while they sampled the surprisingly smooth spirit Cuban rum’s three-year, seven-year old and Añejo Especial varieties. And of course, as befitting the event, some super cocktails.

These included the aforementioned Mojito, a Daiquiri, using the Cuban ‘holy trinity’ of lime, sugar and rum, and a simple but elegant Old Fashioned with bitters and orange peel.

This weekend cocktail-week wristband wearers will be able to enjoy a Moscow Mule, a Gin Rhubarb Collins, or a Raspberry Smash, made with Havana Club Añejo 3 years 3 Rum, raspberry, lemon, and pink lemonade, for £5.50 at Bill’s Brighton.
