Jog on - if you can!

A "breve" has become so much more than a musical note and a diacritical mark.

A "breve" has become so much more than a musical note and a diacritical mark. The Americans have shoved "Caffè" in front of it and created a new coffee-based beverage.

A Caffè Breve is basically a variety of Latte. The distinguishing factor is the use of another American term: half-and-half.

What does all of this mean? Not an awful lot. Instead of using trusty semi-skimmed milk, a Caffè Breve calls for equal parts milk and full-fat cream.

If you think that sounds nice, go ahead and ask for a Breve. If you think that sounds like a waste of time, animal products and your calorie allowance, stick to a Latte.

A regular Breve is over 400 calories, whereas a Latte comes in at under 50. A McDonald's Hamburger, Egg Mcmuffin and their Apple Pie each come in at fewer calories than a Breve. That knowledge should be enough to discourage even the most ardent dairy consumer to amend their ways.

If you're still not convinced, we give up. But we still won't make a Breve. We would say "jog on" - but you probably can't.
