Review: Enjoy a three-course meal under the stars, looking out over the city

There's something magical about dining in the sky, looking out over Brighton and Hove at night, with a glass of Nyetimber sparkling wine in hand.

British Airways i360 held the first of its public Sky Dining events last Thursday, and happily it’s set to become a regular feature.

The glass pod is a perfect place for a romantic meal, or a unique way to celebrate a special occasion, as diners glide up to 450 feet during each course.

To set the scene, the pod is decked out in stellar style and throughout the evening there are three 25-minute ‘flights’.

For the first ascent we could enjoy Brighton and Hove in all its daytime glory, with the sun shining and a chance to spot local landmarks from up high.

By the second course the sky begins to darken, but the show really starts in the final flight, where you can look over the twinkling lights of the city at night.

The food was freshly prepared in the West Beach Bar & Kitchen restaurant below, and we started with mackerel parfait with pea shoots and garlic crostini – or a delicious vegetable terrine for me – moving on to seared chicken with fondant potato, spinach, glazed carrots and jus (a wonderfully-seasoned cauliflower steak was the vegetarian option).

A choice of crème brulee or chocolate mousse was the dessert served with coffee for the final flight; a perfect end to the evening.

The service was seamless, and waiters kept the wine flowing – and don’t worry, there’s toilet breaks when the pod glides back to ground level between each course.

For a bit of a special night out, Sky Dining certainly brings something different to the table.

The i360 offers a choice of a table for two up to a party of ten, as well as the opportunity to book out the entire pod for corporate events.
