North Laines’ newest venue highlights the best of Brighton food and art
A new food and drink venue which is set to open in Brighton next month has announced collaborations with artists and food experts from Brighton and Hove, and beyond.
Brighton based couple, Ross Blake and Alice Duvernois, are the owners of 640 East, Upper Gardner Street which will provide pre-order coffee, craft beer and wine, and ‘thoughtful’ food.

Oliver Hassan, formerly of The Griffin in Fletching and The Victory Inn in Cornwall, will head up the kitchen at the new venue.
With 15 years of experience, Oliver takes inspiration for his dishes from his Middle-Eastern roots. “I’m really excited to be able to bring my heritage into the dishes at 640 East, packed with big flavours,” he said.
“We’re working with some incredible suppliers from here in Sussex, to be able to bring the best quality produce to our diners - working directly with producers will allow us to be really creative with our dishes, changing with the seasons.”
Author of The Self-Care Cookbook, Gemma Ogston, will work with 640 East to create plant-based dishes for the menu.
Gemma said: “I am really happy to be working with 640 East on creating some mood boosting plant-based food for their menu, as well as collaborating on some really exciting events in the new year.”
Everything from the plates, to the artwork and interior design of the venue will be provided by local artists and creatives.
Collaborations include Potter’s Thumb, street artist ‘Minty’, and Vine Street vintage and Diggs respectively.
Co-owner of 640 East Alice Duvernois said: “It’s been great getting to know local businesses and working with them to complete the style for the space.”
Beer will be curated by local expert Jess Mason, of Drinks Maven with mixologist and general manager David Miller, previously Merchant House, creating a Brighton and Hove inspired cocktail menu.
Founder of Brighton Coffee Festival, Dan White, will be in charge of the coffee menu.
Pop-up events will take place at the venue throughout December and January with an evening of festive food hosted by ex Smoking Goat chef Aaron Dalton on Friday, December 13, followed by a disco brunch on Saturday, December 14, and a roast on Sunday, December 15.
A plant-based supper club will be hosted by Gemma Ogston on January 30.
Also in January, Michael Notman-Watts will be bringing his SKINT concept from The Syndicate Kitchen, offering a full tasting menu for £25.
The venue will be officially open on December 16 from 7am.
