1066 anniversary: New statue put in place

The first part of Battle's 1066 memorial statue was erected on the roundabout by the town's fire station last night (Thursday, October 13), ready for the anniversary weekend.

Renowned Kent-based sculptor Guy Portelli’s masterpiece will be officially unveiled on November 11.

The statue will depict a Norman soldier on horseback being attacked by a lone Saxon, an opening scene from the Battle of Hastings.

The statue, which is being crowdfunded to the tune of £41,000, has been dubbed ‘the people’s monument’ by Battle mayor David Furness, who spearheaded the campaign to bring the statue to the town.
