1066 Specials soccer contest

HARDY teams who paid no attention to the weather forecast were the sides to benefit from a charity football tournament on Sunday.

The 1066 Specials hosted their annual competition at St Richard's Catholic College despite several sides dropping out due to the threat of rain.

Instead players and organisers were met with fair weather as they set about a day playing the 'beautiful game'.

And, despite the late cancellations, there were still plenty of teams and an abundance of skilful players on show.

The tournament is designed to give players with disabilities and special needs, who turn out for sides such as the 1066 Specials, the chance to play competitive football.

The event included a fundraising raffle, cake stall and barbecue.

Publicity and fundraising officer for 1066 Specials, Harold Lawrence, said: "We have got teams from Kent, Sussex and Surrey and we have got under 16, over 16 and under 11 sides so it has gone pretty well.

"We were very nervous about the weather forecast but we decided to carry on and the sun has shone on us.

"The kids have loved it and the parents have been spurring them on. It would just be nice to see the 1066 Specials win one of their own tournaments for once!"
