23 people detained at Newhaven after ‘attempting to enter the UK illegally’

Immigration officers have detained 23 people who were trying to enter the UK illegally, the Home Office said.

Border Force detected the individuals ‘attempting to enter the UK illegally’ at Newhaven after travelling on a ferry from Dieppe on Thursday 31 December, a spokesman confirmed.

He said the people were taken into custody and will be interviewed by immigration officers.

The spokesman added: “Their cases will be dealt with according to the immigration rules.”

Sussex Police confirmed on Thursday afternoon, December 31, officers responded to support Border Force staff dealing with ‘a number of people suspected of not having authority to enter the UK, attempting to leave a ferry that had arrived at Newhaven Port’.

A spokeswoman added: “Those detained are being taken into custody by Border Force for further enquiries.”
