Activity centre proves a hit as youngsters find no time to be bored

Fun in the sun can be enjoyed in a near £1m new activity area in Butlins in Bognor Regis.

The outdoor site was opened in the resort last weekand immediately attracted eager guests.

They enjoyed archery, fencing, a climbing wall, an aerial adventure centre, a driving school for children, a full-sized five-a-side football pitch, which can also be used for basketball, and a sand pitch for beach volleyball and football.

These are encircled by a perimeter path, dotted with seats, which will be lit at night to enable guests to stroll around the sports zone.

Among the first users of the site was Callum Hersum, 13, from Reading. He got stuck into the archery and the football, with the sand football to follow.

His mum, Margaret Hersum, 52, said: "This area is fantastic and a great amenity.

"I last went to Butlins in Filey when I was 14 and this is so much more what the kids want. I have not heard the words 'I am bored' all week.

"This is our first time in Bognor and I'm quite impressed with it. The beach is beautiful. "

The activities have been created from the site of the former call centre and unused ground between the Skyline Pavilion and the A259 boundary fence.

Work started late last November and is about to be finished. Its completion will create two zip wires where aerial adventurers can zoom above the ground towards the new Ocean Hotel.

This will complement the already completed 11m high climbing wall as well as a high wire daredevil attraction which will feature swings and wobbly bridges.

Jeremy Pardey, the resort's director, said the investment was the result of the views of his visitors.

"Health and well-being is really important to our guests," he explained. "That led us to create an area that had outdoor activities for families to enjoy together. It's about a family experience."

The creation of the outdoor area has been joined by a 1m upgrade of 182 chalets last year and the refurbishment of two shops.
