Rye Harbour Sailing Club’s (RHSC) Commodore Caroline Wylson, says the event, held on Saturday, March 11 was a great success. “The weather was warm for the time of year with just a gentle breeze - enough to ensure that everyone had the chance of a great taster sail,” she said.

“Twelve people had a go at dinghy sailing. We received positive feedback from all tasters, some became new members, whilst others showed a keen interest in learning to sail and wanted to join once they had moved to the area.”

One young ‘taster sailor’ and new RHYC member Oliver, 12, enthused: “The sail was great fun... can I have another go?”

Caroline added: “The event raised £120 for the RHSC refurbishment project. RHSC would like to thank everyone who took part as well as the volunteers who helped to make the day so successful and enjoyable.”

RHSC are holding another taster sail on Easter Saturday, April 15. Caroline said: “Whether you have joined the club and want to gain some confidence on the water or you just want to have a go why not come along and join us? High Water is at 2.26pm. You will need to arrive at 1pm to register and be kitted out with a buoyancy aid. Please do wear warm clothes.”

The bar will be open with food available to buy from the BBQ. If the weather is not suitable for sailing there will be the chance to cover some theory work in the clubhouse with the help of Royal Yachting Association videos and/or purchase food and drinks.

Taster sails, are free but visitors are invited to make a donation towards the RHSC Refurbishment Project which Caroline says is coming on in leaps and bounds. “Tolletts, local contractors, hired to construct the new changing rooms, are aiming to complete by May 9. They have been working hard to get the build completed on time.

“We are delighted with the progress to date and grateful to all club members, local businesses and the public who have supported this exciting new project.
