Andy takes onLondon to Parisbike challenge

Battle resident Andy Coulter is about to complete his own Tour De France when he completes a 300km charity bike ride for domestic charity Hestia.

Andy took on the London – Paris Bike Ride challenge and is due to cross the finishing line in Paris on Sunday July 26.

Established in 1970, Hestia is charity working across 22 London boroughs providing safety and support to almost 9,000 vulnerable adults and children every year.

Andy said: “People ask, “Why do you do charity rides, what’s the point?” The answer is, “everybody wins”

“If you want to stick at anything, you need a motivation. Many people can’t stick to exercise because without a goal at the end of all that expended effort, it really is pointless.

“Sure, you can enjoy the sensation of exercise, the open road, running on the beach, winning, going faster, further, higher, but when it’s cold, raining, and early or late, you need more drive.

“Knowing you have a charity event that you have announced to the world you are going to complete, is a sure fire way to make sure you train, because if you don’t train, it’s really going to hurt.

“If having a goal is the answer to keeping you training, it may as well be one that not only puts you on the spot, but adds the extra pressure of people paying to make sure you complete it, so then everybody wins. You have drive, your friends get to make sure you do your best, the charity raises money, and you get to feel that the energy to expend is to do some good rather than just go round in circles burning calories.

“I am supporting Hestia because what they do is needed. Sometimes people just need help to stand up for themselves and look after themselves, so Hestia steps in to show them how. I wish all our social services could work this way, but they can’t so we need charities like Hestia to fill that gap.”
