St Nicholas’ Church, in London Road, had a 1950s theme for its annual event, which raised an impressive £5,000 for the church restoration fund.

Stalls were set up in and around the churchyard, with a section of London Road closed to traffic to allow fete-goers to browse the many attractions, for all the family.

Hundreds of people attended the fete on a glorious summer’s day and it was a great success, according to Alison Wilkinson, fundraiser for St Nicholas’.

She said: “Everyone entered into the spirit of the theme and the fun of the day.

“The money raised will be a welcome addition to our restoration fund, as work on the church continues.”

The Nevada King, in his authentic Elvis costume and with the shades, trembling lips and swivelling hips, entertained his audience with a string of familiar hits.

St Nicholas’ own church rockers, The Alternatives, followed suit with a medley of 1950s’ hits and on a more mellow note, the church’s Barber Shop Quartet performed, too.

The event also featured the church’s first horticultural and produce show, with prizes for the best Victoria sandwich, preserves, flower arrangements and fun children’s classes.
