PARISH COUNCIL NEWS: Changes to local policing. Rob Lovell, NPT Inspector, Lewes District Police attended the February parish council meeting. He reported on the practical impact that budget cuts will have on local police and Police Community Support Officer provision. The new PCSO service model will start on July 4 and will place three, four-person PCSO teams at Lewes; these will cover the district and be deployed flexibly to wherever they are required. Across the county there will be a reduction from to 259 PCSO posts to about 200. PCSO powers will be expanded slightly with the focus more on crime prevention and problem-solving. PCSOs will still be in the field and will remain contactable by individuals or communities. Once team structure is confirmed, PCSO contact details will be circulated. In response to a question from a Councillor, Inspector Lovell explained that the target response time for an emergency call in the district is 15 minutes, and that currently this target is met 80 percent of the time.

On the roads. ESCC was asked to repaint the double yellow lines on School Hill (since done). A letter has been written to the school thanking the Head for raising the issue of inconsiderate parking with parents and carers, and pointing out the potential consequences that poor parking could have for the safety of village children. ESCC will investigate, at the council’s request, the road surface at Exchange Corner to see if safety can be improved. The parish council is to investigate the loan of mobile speed monitoring equipment.

Recreation Ground. The playground’s safety report has been received from Lewes District Council, and the few small necessary repairs are in hand. Representatives from a group of parents investigating playground improvement reported to the Parish Council. A small team has been formed. This has met Individuals at Lewes District Council and is to consult parents/carers in the village. It was agreed that the group will present some ideas and the results of its consultations at the parish council meeting on March 20.

GARDEN CLUB: Barcombe Garden Club welcomes Pete ‘the Pond’ Birchall on Tuesday at 7.30pm in the village hall. Come and find out about building and managing ponds of all shapes and sizes. Pete estimates that he has built and cared for over 60 ponds, and has surveyed, paddled and waded in many more. Refreshments. All welcome.

CINEMA CLUB: Barcombe Cinema Club present the latest James Bond movie, Spectre, at the village hall tomorrow, Saturday. Starring Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes and Monica Bellucci. ‘As Bond ventures towards the heart of Spectre, he learns of a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks, played by Christoph Waltz’. The film will begin at 7.30pm with an interval for tea and coffee. The bar will open at 7pm for pre-performance drinks and again in the interval.
