Bexhill 100 - biggest and best yet

RACING cars of the period will be a special feature of this year's Bexhill 100 - celebratory the centenary of the 1902 Bexhill Motor Trials.

The May Bank Holiday event on De La Warr Parade, scene of Britain's first international motorsport event, will include not only Bexhill's replica of Leon Serpollet's event-winning steam car but the 1898 Orient Express, the 1900 Gardner Serpollet, a 1901 Mors, a 1904 Napier Sansom and a 1911 Rio Pickup (pictured left)

World parallel parking champion Russ Swift captured the hearts of Bexhill 100 crowds two years ago. He's back again this year with two displays a day on the Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday.

Local driver Darryl Bradford will be firing-up his 600bp Top Fuel-class dragster. The 35ft long missile imposes a six-G load on Darryl when it launches him from a drag strip's start line.

Helicopter pilot Denis Kenyon performed some of the stunts in the recently-released film Black Hawk. He will give two displays a day at the 100.

Bexhill Division of the St John Ambulance Brigade are also celebrating their own centenary. They will be displaying a 1907 ambulance - featuring state-of-the-art canvas body!

In a bid to include the community in the centenary year Bexhill 100, town centre entertainment will be provided on the Friday and Saturday preceding the two-day May Bank Holiday event.

Laurel and Hardy lookalikes will be performing antics in their Model T Ford.

Charlie the Clown and the Expedient Jazz Band plus a one-man band will offer street entertainment.

The Company of Cyclists, dressed in period costume, will be touring the town on vintage bicycles and staging a free Bike Try-Out Roadshow in the De La Warr Pavilion car park throughout the weekend.

The tradition pre-100 parade of classic vehicles will leave the De La Warr Pavilion at noon on Saturday, May 4 and tour the town centre, Sidley, Little Common and Cooden, returning to the pavilion by 2pm.

At 9.30 on the Saturday evening, there will be a beach firework display near the Sailing Club, supported by Bexhill's Charter Trustees and featuring live music and a galloping horses roundabout.
