Both groups have made applications for grants from Rother District Council’s £99,000 pot, with cabinet set to make the final decisions at a meeting on Monday (March 13).

The sailing club, based on De La Warr Parade, asked for 35 per cent of its £62,817 project to upgrade the clubhouse with modern, durable cladding to the east and west outside elevations.

Rother’s grants panel deemed the application suitable for a £22,444 grant, as long as the funding for the other 65 per cent was in place.

However the councillors were not so agreeable with the Peartree Lane football club as the application was for ‘ineligible repairs and maintenance’.

The owners want to replace the vinyl flooring and redecorating the changing rooms, walkway and toilets and asked for £4,950 from Rother.

Cllr Stuart Earl had given it his backing but the panel recommended rejection as it does not meet the grant scheme’s guidelines.

Two other applications were made and recommended for approval – £3,000 for Netherfield Pre-School and £3,132 for Rye Cricket Club.
