It was the part of the company's Forever Against Animal Testing Campaign to end animal experiments.

And what better place to raise awareness than in the home of the company's very first store, which founder Anita Roddick opened in 1976 at 22 Kensington Gardens, Brighton.

Staff petitioned in the town centre, The Lanes and Regency Square, speaking to Brighton locals about the issues surrounding animal testing in cosmetics and asked them to support the campaign by signing the petition.

They were also joined by The Body Shop CEO David Boynton, Cruelty Free International CEO Michelle Thew and Head of Campaigns for The Body Shop International, Jessie Macneil-Brown and local MPs Lloyd Russell-Moyle and Peter Kyle.

Once the petition reaches eight million signatures, The Body Shop and Cruelty Free International will present it to the United Nations, calling for an international convention to ban animal testing on cosmetics to protect millions of animals around the world. The campaign launched over a year and has already received over 6.3 million signatures, making it the biggest ever against animal testing in cosmetics.

Jessie Macneil-Brown, head of global campaigns at The Body Shop, said: “At The Body Shop we believe passionately in animal welfare and that animals shouldn’t be used for cosmetic testing. Our employees have worked passionately worldwide to secure over 6 million petition signatures. Their passion and dedication is instrumental in fighting for a global ban. Activism is at the heart of The Body Shop, so it’s been great to have our UK office staff to join us today in the place where The Body Shop began.”
