Bognor pupils get vision of exciting £10m future

Excited pupils have had their first glimpse of their new Bognor Regis school.

The 24 children from The Glade Infant School were treated to the view of the 10m primary school which is taking shape on their doorstep.

The replacement school will see the infant school merged with the nearby Michael Ayres Junior School to provide education for 630 four to 11-year-olds.

A viewing platform has been constructed next to the building site by contractor Willmott Dixon.

Among those enjoying seeing the future of education in the town was six-year-old Ruby Stead. She said: "The new school is looking really good. I want to see what it looks like inside."

Kimberley Lumley, seven, stated: "I'm looking forward to sitting at my desk in my new classroom and writing."

Each of the children clutched a clipboard to enable them to draw the frame of the new building and to write about it as well.

Children from Michael Ayres have twice visited the site.

Willmott Dixon building manager David Adams has also gone into both schools, as well as the Stepping Stones nursery on the campus, to talk about the building work.

He said the project was progressing well. It should be handed over to the county council at Christmas ready to be fitted out for its opening.

"The roof will be going on in the next two or three weeks," he said. "We will have about 80 men working here at the peak."

The as yet unnamed school will have 21 classrooms over two floors, an assembly area with a flexible capacity and be fully accessible for disabled pupils. Underfloor heating will be used throughout.
