Sussex Police said Alex Besmir has been jailed for nine and a half years after being convicted of two counts of GBH with intent and drug possession.

In the early hours of January 1 this year, two men were walking from a party in Bedford Place with one of their friends, said officers. They were arguing while they walked home along Temple Street around 3.30am and a man, later established as Alex Besmir, shouted at them to be quiet from a top floor window, the court heard.

He threatened them before emerging onto the street, confronting them then attacking them, said police.

Officers said one of the men, an 18-year-old was stabbed in the chest, and the other, an 18-year-old, suffered injuries to his hand and arm.

Alex Besmir, 34, a maintenance employee, of Temple Street, Brighton was arrested and charged with two counts of GBH with intent and possession of a class A drug.

He pleaded guilty and was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court on March 12. He will be deported back to Albania when he is released, said police.

Detective Constable Aaron Halsey said: “This was a violent attack on two men. It was New Year’s Eve in a very busy part of the city and his reaction was totally out of proportion to the incident.

“The length of the sentence shows the severity of the offence and he will be deported after he has served his sentence and will no longer be a resident in our city.”
