Brighton MP calls for votes at 16

Speaking in the House of Commons yesterday (April 19), Caroline Lucas said: “Does the right hon. Gentleman agree that if this election is, as the Prime Minister says, about a more secure future for the country — if it is an election of such national significance — there should be, as a matter of urgency, a change in the law to give Britain’s 1.5 million 16 and 17-year-olds a say in what will be very much their future on 8 June?”

Angus Robertson, the deputy leader of the Scottish National Party, agreed with Ms Lucas, and said: “It is, again, unsustainable that young people should be given the vote in some elections and referendums, but denied it in others.”

Britain will go to the polls on Thursday, June 8, after MPs agreed to support a general election in Parliament yesterday (April 19).
