Brighton students responded to the survey with feelings varying from indifferent to appalled.

Fliss Newton, VP Wellbeing for Brighton Students Union, said: 'It's everyone's choice how much sex they have.

'We're not going to preach to our students to be in a relationship for three years just because that's what society expects.'

The survey was taken by 2,000 of the 22,000 Brighton University students, with neighbours Sussex University coming 61st in the survey.

Ms Newton continued: 'The generation who will hear the number and think badly of it are very different to the generation of people here now.

'If you have enough time to have that much sex and get a good degree then good on you.

'As long as it's done safely we're not here to dictate to or judge our students.'

Some students have pointed to the liberal attitude of Brighton along with its bustling night life to explain the results.

Temi Tyrese, 19, studying account and finance, said: 'I'm not surprised. In hall's it's particularly bad but Brighton accepts it.'

The university runs a volunteer based sexual health clinic which scanned more than 400 students for chlamydia scans in the first week.

Sam Mallender, coordinator of the Contraception and Sexual Health Clinic, said: 'We would rather a student slept with 100 different people rather than stay in one relationship having unprotected sex and never having an STI check.

'It's not the numbers that are concerning, it's the safety that matters.'

Brighton students can freely go to their sexual health clinic and book an appointment or email in at [email protected].
