Burwash

Whist: The monthly whist drive last week was great fun and a big success. There were five tables playing the twenty hand of cards with some serious and not so serious play going on. They all tucked in well to the light finger buffet which was fresh and delicious and quite a choice. The evenings are not meant for big profit but for enjoyment and new friendships. They are held on the first Thursday of each month so why not put it in your diary and come along in November.

Thank you: Last Saturday the Burwash Brownies & Guides held one of the autumn jumble sales at the Burwash village hall. They had a good afternoon with a lot of items donated to the stalls. They would like to thank everyone who supported them whether it be donating, manning the stalls or going along. The number of visitors was down on recent years but they had a good afternoon anyway. so thank you all. Not sure how much they raised yet will let you know next week.

Quiz: It was a very noisy but enjoyable quiz evening on Saturday at the Burwash village hall. twelve teams gave their brains a workout to the questions of Steve & Terry our resident quiz masters. The questions were interesting with some really easy and others difficult. There was a delicious supper served at half time of a platter of cold meats & cheeses with trimming and French bread, thanks to the efforts of Ann Ashton & Sue Kork. Dessert was home made apple pies, made by five of the village hall committee ladies, served with cream. The winners of the evening were Be Prepared with 106 points. Well done them. Again unsure of the profits but this will be used for the refurbishment of the ladies cloakroom.

Quiz night: The monthly quiz at the Burwash Common Pavilion will be held tonight from 8pm. As always teams of six are welcome to enter at £2 per person. Refreshments are available for those who wish. Vegas Night: Tomorrow evening The Burwash Common and Weald Residents Association will be holding one of their famous Vegas nights at the Burwash Common Pavilion. The fun begins at 7.30pm. Play Roulette, blackjack & Rolling the Bones. Prepay a committee member or at the door £7.50 per person, BC &WRA members £6.50. Contact Lesley Elmslie 01435 883510 or Lindsay Green 07775 862846. Sounds like an evening full of fun.

Flower Club: The Burwash Flower Arrangement club will be holding a workshop on Wednesday morning in the Burwash village hall. Mrs Pamela Fuller will demonstrate Handbag fit For A Queen. The workshop will be held in the Burwash Village hall from 10am to 12 noon. If you would like to take part, please call Maureen Jenner on 01435 882045. The morning will cost £10 per person.

NSY: The Burwash Not So Young Club will have their next meeting on Thursday afternoon at the Burwash Village Hall from 2.15pm. This lively group of senior residents of the three villages enjoy a wide range of talks etc. This month Ian Rumley-Dawson will be talking on Wildlife of the Sussex Coastline. Ian always gives a charming and informative presentation and is well worth hearing. If you are over 60 and would like to join them just pop along to hall on Thursday afternoon. The club will be making their final preparations for their Come To Tea event on 22 October which is open for us all to join in. Tea and a raffle end the meeting.

Short Mat Bowls: The season is underway in the Wealden league, which finds Burwash having been promoted to the first division. Their first game was a home fixture to Chiddingly which saw triples Martyn Casey, Mary Taylor & Margaret Waterhouse draw 16 all and Angela & Keith Marden and Gavin Wood win 31-1. After the tea break the pairs played with Julie Hawkins and Keith Wood winning 18-4 and Alan Green & Alec Martin 18-10. This was a great start giving us 7 leaue points. Postal Quiz: For all those who are looking for the Autumn postal quiz, I am really sorry but with illness and other things that get in the way I have been unable to get it ready in time. So I have decided to give myself a break and prepare it for the new year. Please accept my apologies for disappointing you It is in my head but not yet on paper. Thank you all for your continued support of these quizzes. I will keep you all informed.
