New data released today said Brighton and Hove had the third cheapest taxi fares in the 25 most-populated cities in the UK (March 20).

The research by private number plate specialists has combined local authority data to create an interactive map to highlight the average cost of a taxi in 25 cities.

Brighton was third cheapest for average cost per mile at £2.28.

Only Liverpool (£2.15) and Edinburgh (£2.22) were cheaper according to the research.

Cab fares were taken from local authority websites, and the average cost per mile was calculated on the basis of one to five-mile journeys in each city.

The calculation is based on a one-person journey in a hackney cab on the basic weekday daytime tariff.

The most expensive cities were Coventry (£3.11), Leeds (£3.06) and Oxford (£3.04).
