Car Boot sales could be money spinner for Pagham

CAR boot sales could become a money spinner for Pagham Parish Council.

The popular events with bargain hunters are likely to be staged on the paddock behind the village hall.

The parish council has agreed in principle to begin hiring the land to commercial users.

A taskforce of five councillors has been set up to decide the level of charges and how they should be levied. Their first meeting will take place on July 13.

Parish council chairman Ray Radmall said car boot sales used to be held on the site of the village hall car park in the early nineties.

"They attracted 80-90 pitches and if we charged 5 a pitch that would be big money," he said.

"The benefit now is that we would not have cars parked up and down Pagham Road because they would be parked in the car park and there would be no need to embarrass our neighbours.

"But if we set a fee of 10, and there were a lot of pitches, the organiser would make a fortune."

Chris Braby, the council's clerk, said he had been approached by a village hall hirer who wanted to hold the sales on the paddock.

The acre, formerly a field for growing sweetcorn, has been used by the parish council for two years after it was leased from farmer Derek Bell. The intention was to create an area to overcome a shortage of play sites.
