Carjack at gunpoint

TWO people suffered a terrifying ordeal when a man brandishing what appeared to be a gun, carjacked their vehicle in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police said the armed robbery happened following an argument involving two groups of men at a house in Falkland Avenue, Littlehampton, during which one man was reported to be carrying a gun.

The men standing outside the house were chased away into Southfields Road where the car was then taken.

Its occupants, a male driver and a male passenger, neither linked with the earlier incident, were ordered to get out by the gunman. They escaped uninjured.

Minutes later, the stolen car was dumped in Armada Way.

A 20-year-old man was arrested by armed police at 3.25am in nearby Ensign Way.

No gun was recovered.

The man was initially held in custody by police and appeared in court on Monday, charged with robbery, possession of a firearm while committing a robbery and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear or violence.

He was then remanded to prison custody.

Sgt Peter Allan of Littlehampton police said: "I want to reassure the public about gun crime and make it clear that the man was quickly apprehended.
