The graffiti depicts the main characters from adult animated show Rick & Morty, a sci-fi comedy about a sociopathic, alcoholic scientist who takes his grandson on a series of inter-dimensional misadventures.

A picture of the house’s exterior was well received by users of the internet site reddit, who upvoted it nearly 40 thousand times and left 800 approving comments.

The house is in good company on upper Lewes Road, where two doors down is another student home painted with characters from the animated show Adventure Time, and opposite is a mural depicting a headmaster pushing faceless children into a sausage machine, a famous scene from the cinematic adaptation of Pink Floyd’s album The Wall.

When asked about his relationship with the occupants of the other painted houses, University of Brighton student Alex Cartwright, who lives in the Rick & Morty house, said: “I don’t know them. I did lend one of them my IPod charger once, though.

“I think the murals are mainly to hide the fact the houses are crumbling and mouldy,” Mr Cartwright laughed.

Mehdi Yavari, 22, Biomedical student and also a tenant of the Rick & Morty house, told The Brighton & Hove Independent: “We had no say in the design, but luckily we are fans of the show.”

“It was a grim colour before — sort of a snot yellow”, commented the third housemate, 21-year-old Chelsea Briggs.

The Rick & Morty artwork was done on commission by local graffiti artist Aroe MSK, who is also responsible for the other two murals on Upper Lewes Road, as well as one on Viaduct Road featuring Queen Victoria and another on Hartington Road containing Homer and Bart Simpson.
