BIRD NEWS: Did you notice a Chinook helicopter flying low over the south of the village last week? Unfortunately, a bird hit the windscreen and then went into the gearing forcing the helicopter to land in a hay field at Hooe. There was no major damage but the Chinook was grounded until clearance from the experts, giving time for a couple of local farmers to go and have a look. As everyone knows, a length of bailer twine can solve almost any problem, but the offer of a quick fix was declined in this case. There was also a Spitfire flying over on Saturday following a display on the seafront at Bexhill. Other bird news is that the pair of peregrine falcons nesting locally have successfully reared two beautiful chicks.
WI OUTING: The WI outing on the hottest day of the year went very well, although several members were reluctant to risk the heat. We had a superb beginning at Birling Gap with the sparkling sea and welcome breeze. Walking around Alfriston village was rather hot, but there were opportunities for cooling lunches and an interesting walk around the Clergy House. Micheldene WI welcomed us for a splendid tea in East Dean village hall, scones, cream, home-made jam and cakes with jugs of water and tea served in vintage china. Our next event is the garden party in August, apart from serving tea at the village fete on Saturday August 6 of course.

Hide AdSPORT: Cricket away at Ashburnham resulted in a loss with Ashburnham reaching 242 for 8. Perry Holland got a hat trick and finished with 3 for 13, A Jay 2 for 45 and Andy Williams 3 for 46. We were 204 all out, Derek Fuller 52, David Taylor 38 and Tim Pitman 31. Sunday we play Sedlescombe away.
