Charter Trustees nominate new Town Mayor

SAINT Stephen's Ward member Cllr Paul Lendon was nominated as Bexhill's next Town Mayor at an informal meeting of the Charter Trustees on Tuesday.

The special meeting was called as a result of last Thursday's Rother elections when Town Mayor-elect Keith Bridger lost his Sidley ward seat.

St Mark's Ward member Cllr Patrick Douart was nominated as Deputy Town Mayor.

Rother chief executive Derek Stevens, who also acts as clerk to the town's Charter Trustees, said yesterday that the revised nominations would be put to the annual mayor-making ceremony on Tuesday, May 22.

Current Town Mayor Eric Armstrong will remain in office as planned until the change-over ceremony despite having lost his Old Town Ward seat.

The Charter Trustees are the 18 Bexhill councillors on Rother. Since loss of borough status when Bexhill was merged with Battle and Rye to form Rother in 1974 they have had responsibility for caring for the former borough plate and regalia and for electing a Town Mayor and Deputy Town Mayor each year.
