Police say the girl was sitting on a bench in Steine Gardens in the city centre on the morning of Monday July 22, sometime shortly before 11.30am, when a man approached and engaged her in conversation.

He then took her back to his address, which police believe was somewhere in the nearby North Laines area, where she was raped – said Sussex Police.

Officers describe the man as English, white, tall and slim, and has some ability to speak Spanish and Italian.

Detective Constable Suzy MacLintock of the Brighton Safeguarding Investigations Unit said police enquiries began on the same day the rape was reported, but they had had difficulty in engaging with and supporting the victim as she had returned to her home country.

She added: “If you think you recognise him, please get in touch with us either online or by calling 101, quoting serial 900 of 22/07.”
