A public backlash against Horsham police has been prompted after officers publicised a roadway speed trap.

Police posted a photo on social media of them carrying out speed checks on drivers in Lower Beeding.

But it sparked a wave of protests from people angrily asking why officers were not tackling more ‘serious crimes’ in Horsham town centre.

Over recent weeks, a gang – wearing balaclavas and said to be armed with knives – have been reportedly carrying out unprovoked attacks.

Many residents say they are now too scared to go out at night and accuse the police of failing to do anything about the situation.

And the police photo of a roadway speed check on Sunday proved a red rag and final straw for many.

They responded in droves on social media. “How about concentrating on catching the balaclava gang who are running amok in Horsham?,” said one. “Look at the increase in muggings that are happening in broad daylight..... People will only put up with this for so long before they feel that the only way forward is to take the law into their own hands.”

Another said: “How about getting up to Horsham instead to prioritise the attacks and disorder!!!!” Another man said: “Motorists are easy picking but disorder is too much like work – talk about priorities.”

A woman added: “Can do this but can't catch real criminals in Horsham terrorising innocent people!” And another man pleaded: “Catch the little gangs in town instead please.” And another: “No other serious crimes in the area like knife crime or assaults to deal with?”

One person said: “Horsham Police may want to look at introducing a curfew on the thugs at 5pm onwards so we can walk out in our town safely. Redhill do this!”

But some stood up for the police. One said: “A police presence to promote better driving habits can only be a good thing.” And others pointed out the speed check area was a dangerous stretch of road.

Sussex Police have already stated that they are tackling the violent crimewave in Horsham: “We want to reassure the public that we are taking action to disrupt and deter this behaviour.

“We have listened to the community’s concern and have increased our resources in the area as a result, including over last weekend when we issued a dispersal order, aimed to prevent groups from gathering and committing offences.”

They outlined other actions they had taken, including arrests, and added: “We continue to work closely with partners including Horsham District Council, the community and businesses to understand what the issues are, who is responsible, and how we can work together to address these issues.”

They added: "We need the community to report incidents through to us so we can gather intelligence and ensure our resources are in the right place at the right time to prevent, detect and respond to crime and ensure Horsham remains a safe space for everyone.

“You can report it online or call 101, or in an emergency, dial 999.”
