UPDATE: CCTV released following attempted abduction of eight-year-old girl

Police have released a CCTV image of man they would like to trace after a man attacked and tried to abduct an eight-year-old girl in the city centre.

Officers said a man followed the girl as she was walking home along Gloucester Road at about 8.25am yesterday morning (May 5) after posting a letter at a nearby post box.

As she turned the corner into Tidy Street he ran up and grabbed hold of her, pushing her to the ground.

He was spotted by two passers-by and ran off in the direction of Trafalgar Street, police added.

Police said the incident is now being treated as an attempted abduction.

The man is white, aged in his 20s, between 5’ 6” and 5’ 8”, slim with dark hair and was wearing jeans and a beige jacket.

Detective Inspector Lee Horner said: “We have released this CCTV image of the suspect and want to hear from anyone who recognises him.

“The motive for this attack is not clear and we are not currently linking this matter to any other incidents.

“It was a very frightening experience for the young girl and we need to find this man as quickly as possible.
