'˜Dangerous and stupid': Police warning after bin thrown on train tracks at Hove

Police are investigating after a metal bin was left on the railway tracks near Hove station, almost derailing a train.

British Transport Police (BTP) said the incident happened at around 11pm on Friday (April 7), when the driver of the 10.43pm Southern service from Brighton to Hove reported striking the bin on route.

Officers from BTP, Sussex Police and Network Rail were called to the scene, and as the bin was wedged under the train, passengers had to be evacuated and escorted along the tracks to Hove station.

Detective Sergeant Margret Storey from British Transport Police, said: “This was an incredibly dangerous and stupid thing to do. Thankfully, the train was not derailed however this incident could have been far worse. I’d like to send a warning to anyone who thinks this was a good idea or a ‘laugh’. Reckless behaviour such as this could have had fatal consequences.

“We have now launched an investigation to trace the person responsible. If you have any information on who thought this was a good idea, please get in touch as your information could provide vital.”
