GCSEs: Steady progress for BACA

Two thirds of students (66 per cent) secured grades 9 to 4 grade in English, with 57 per cent making the grade in maths.

And 48 per cent achieved grade 9 to 4 in both English and maths.

Principal Bob Speight said: “There was a 63 per cent pass rate across all subjects with nearly half of all passes being grade 5 or higher ‘strong’ passes. 12 per cent were top grades 7 or higher.

“These results represent steady progress for the academy, building on previous years’ results.

“Our Attainment 8 score is up on last year, and we believe that Progress 8 will also be when the figures are published next month. This year’s group has had to face the most challenging Key Stage 4 curriculum for many years and, with their teachers, have had to adapt to major changes in specifications and exams. They should all be very proud of their achievements.”

Top performers at BACA included Shazahib Ali, who achieved five grade 9s, three grade 8s, two grade 7s and a double Distinction*.

He said: “I can’t believe it! All these 9s!”

Katie Sweetman achieved four 9s, three 8s and a double Distinction*.

Desara Dema achieved 6s for both English and maths, 7s for all three sciences and a grade 9 for Spanish.

Henry Hamonpicked up two 7s and four 6s amongst his 10 strong passes.

Identical twins Jamie and Leo Upton-Maher celebrated identical results in maths, history and triple science.

Jamie, along with James Bishop, Kellie Funnel, Skye Teague and Destiny Johnson were amongst a group of students who all achieved on average more than a grade higher in each of their subjects than their results at primary school had predicted them to achieve.

There were also several strong subject performances, with 90 per cent of entries achieving grades 9 to 4 in French and Spanish, 86 per cent in triple science and 80 per cent in childcare.

Performance in vocational courses was very strong, with 74 per cent achieving merits or better and over a third (34 per cent) at top Distinction or Distinction * grades.

Mr Speight said: “These are the product of many years of hard work and students, parents and staff should all be very proud of what has been achieved.”
