Election campaigns suspended as Brighton and Hove politicians 'stand with Manchester'

Politicians have paid tribute to the victims of the attack at Manchester Arena, which saw 22 killed and dozens injured after an Ariana Grande concert.

Suspending his campaign, Labour candidate for Hove Peter Kyle said: "Manchester is grieving and the heart of Brighton & Hove is filled with thoughts of the families for whom life will never be the same again."

Caroline Lucas, The Green Party candidate for Brighton Pavilion, said her party would halt their campaign today, and said: "Heartbreaking news from Manchester. Our thoughts with those affected and thanks as ever to emergency services."

Kristy Adams, Conservative candidate in Hove, said: "In Hove and Portslade all campaigning activities have been stopped. In our city we know the pain of terrorism, and we stand with Manchester."

Carrie Hynds, Liberal Democrat candidate for Hove, said: "All thoughts and sympathies with Manchester today."

The parties announced their campaigns would be suspended for 24 hours.

Cllr Warren Morgan, the leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, said: "The city of Brighton and Hove will stand with the city of Manchester in solidarity and grief, as will towns and cities around the UK."

A public meeting on air quality, set to be held in Brighton by Keith Taylor today, has been cancelled, as has a Labour Party event at Latest Music Bar in Kemptown.

A planned GMB protest in Brighton over 'Wild West regulation' has also been postponed, following the events last night.
