Council blasts '˜worst flytipping crime' in Brighton '“ as 2.5 tonnes of rubbish dumped in road

Tonnes of rubbish was left strewn across the road in Whitehawk last night (October 3), in what the council is calling '˜the biggest fly tip in living memory'.

Brighton and Hove City Council released photographs of the mess and urged resident to ‘help us catch these criminals’.

The local authority said two men were seen driving a white tipper truck up Whitehawk Hill at 9.30pm on Wednesday, before 2.5 tonnes of rubble, old cupboards, bin bags, paint tins and other rubbish were dumped along a 100 metre stretch of road and the path near St John the Baptist Primary School.

A council spokesperson said: “The men were seen driving at speed with the tipper raised while their piles of rubbish slid from the lorry onto the road. They then raced up a narrow path towards allotments, as more garbage flew off the back of the raised truck.”

Earlier in the day, around 3pm, two men were seen in the same white tipper truck looking around the area, the council said.

The clear up will cost council taxpayers more than £6,000.

Cllr Gill Mitchell, chair of the council’s environment, transport and sustainability committee, said: “This is the worst flytipping crime anyone can remember in the city and I want these criminals to know we will not stop until we find who they are.

“When we do, we will take them to court and secure a prosecution. We will do everything in our powers to ensure they face the full force of the law.”

The flytipping has now been removed, and staff from the council’s Cityclean team are sifting through the rubbish for any vital evidence that will lead them to the lawbreakers.

Council staff are also talking to local residents who may have information on the rogues and also scanning CCTV in a bid to track the vehicle.

Cllr Mitchell said: “Everyone is absolutely shocked by these arrogant and totally uncaring villains who would carry out an act like this, especially beside a primary school, sheltered housing and in a neighbourhood that has a tight knit community.”
