Falmer

MUSIC: Our next musical treat at St Laurence church will be All Kinds Of Everything with the University Of Brighton Community Choir, directed by Susan Bain, on March 19 at 5.30pm. There will be music ranging from Mozart's Ave Verum, Goodall's The Lord is my Shepherd (Vicar of Dibley) to songs from the shows. This will be a fun and informal concert and I am told there may even be a chance for a singalong.

FUNDRAISER: The coffee morning to raise funds for the rebuilding project the Leprosy mission in Nepal is undertaking was a great success and raised in the region of £200. The array of cakes that greeted you on arriving was overwhelming, but then Falmer has a reputation to uphold in the cake making department as regulars to our Summer Sunday Teas can attest.

EASTER: Easter will soon be upon us and with that, our Easter exhibition in St Laurence Church, this year entitled Easter Fires. We have a number of artists and poets taking part and from the work I have already seen and read, I think this year is going to be very special. The show will have its first showing at our Easter Vigil service on Easter Saturday (March 26) and that will be followed by a bring and share supper in the village hall. Further details and times of this and the other Easter services next week.

POSTCARDS: Don’t forget that there will be a showing of John Burt’s postcard collection featuring Victorian and Edwardian views of Stanmer and Falmer on March 15 at 7.30pm at the village hall. These old postcards are fascinating, comparing familiar views and seeing how much has changed.

CHURCH RENOVATIONS: I am pleased to say that the new church vestry is completed and we are delighted with the lovely new cupboards the cleanable floor and most of all, the sink which is actually large enough to wash up in, and has hot and cold water. It seems odd to get excited about washing up, I certainly don’t at home, but it is already making such a difference. We are hoping that the laying of the stone will soon be completed too.
